THE POWER OF OPPORTUNITY: SHIELA MAE CUELLO'S JOURNEY WITH PIA-PAAFI

Education has always been a priority in many Filipino households, and it was no different for one scholar's family. Despite their humble beginnings, Shiela Mae Cuello's parents were committed to ensuring that their children had the opportunity to study and pursue their dreams. However, like many families, the financial burden of education often weighed heavily on them. The costs associated with tuition, school supplies, and daily expenses can quickly add up, making it a challenge for families with limited resources to provide the necessary support.

This is where organizations like the Philippine International Aid (PIA) and the Phil-Asia Assistance Foundation Inc. (PAAFI) make a difference. When Shiela was in Grade 4, she was fortunate enough to be accepted into the PIA-PAAFI scholar- ship program. At the time, she had no idea just how much this opportunity would shape her future.
The financial support provided by PIA-PAAFI played a significant role in easing the burden on Shiela's family. For years, the scholarship alleviated the pressure on her parents, allowing them to focus on other important aspects of family life. The monthly stipend enabled her to purchase school supplies, cover transporta- tion costs, and even have a little extra for snacks. While these might seem like minor things, they made a world of difference to a student striving to succeed academically. Every peso counted, and the assistance provided by PIA-PAAFI allowed Shiela to focus on her studies without constantly worrying about financial challenges.
As a matter of fact, the impact of PIA-PAAFI went beyond financial aid. The organization also provided support and guidance to its scholars through scholarships such as the Off the Streets-Off to School Program, emphasizing the importance of education and the doors it could open. The encouragement from PIA-PAAFI to strive for excellence and never give up was crucial during moments of self-doubt. This strong support system played an essential role in helping the scholar stay motivated, even during the most challenging times.

In July 2022, the scholar's hard work and perseverance culminated in a remarkable achievement - Shiela graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. Her success was a testament not only to her dedication but also to the steadfast support of PIA-PAAFI over the years.

Looking back on the journey, Shiela is filled with immense gratitude for the sponsors and mentors who believed in her and invested in her education. The financial and moral support provided by PIA-PAAFI was not only a lifeline during her academic years but also a source of inspiration. The experience has instilled in her a deep desire to give back and help others in need. Shiela hopes to one day pay it forward and become a source of hope and encouragement for other students who, like her, dream of a brighter future.

Shiela's message is one of heartfelt thanks - PIA-PAAFI has been their driving force, providing strength and encouragement during some of the darkest moments. With their help, Shiela did not just earn a degree, but also gained a newfound sense of purpose and determination. She is committed to making the most of every opportunity and will carry PIA-PAAFI's belief in her as a source of strength for the rest of her journey.
