A Journey of Hope: Zoe Elchico & Her U.S. Scholarship ExperiencE
Zoe Elchico is one of the many great scholars at PIA, whose story highlights the power of education and support. Zoe's selection as the U.S. scholar recipient of Philippine International Aid is a historic and inspiring moment, not only for Zoe but for the entire Filipino community in the United States. As a student at the University of San Francisco, Zoe exemplifies perseverance, dedication, and gratitude — qualities that PIA seeks to foster in the young individuals it supports. Her experience at PIA’s Giving Hope to Children (GHC) fundraiser showcased her humility and genuine appreciation for the opportunities afforded to her through this prestigious award.
When PIA Board Member Dr. Elaine Serina called to inform Zoe of her selection, she was initially shocked, saying, “I felt initially shocked, and once the shock settled, I felt deeply honored.” Despite the whirlwind, she expressed deep gratitude, noting, “I feel so thankful for the people involved in this process… for their thoughtful consideration in selecting me, and for making me feel welcome in the Gala and Fundraiser.”
Receiving the award in front of the Filipino community at the GHC fundraiser was deeply humbling for Zoe. She reflected, “As I looked into the crowd and approached the stage… I felt honored, humbled, and grateful to be part of such an uplifting community.” This moment showcased PIA’s impact on both individuals and communities. Zoe has ambitious plans for the future as she continues her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture with a Design minor and aims to become a licensed architect in California. “I hope to graduate and get a license to work as an architect,” she shared. Zoe also looks forward to giving back to PIA, saying, “I am eager to support PIA’s mission through volunteering, representation, and being an example of what PIA can achieve.”
