A Call to Compassion

Dear Community,

In the wake of the devastating fires that have swept through Southern California, many of our fellow Filipino American families have been displaced and are facing significant hardships. As a community that thrives on unity and mutual support (the bayanihan spirit) we ask that you join Philippine International Aid (PIA) in extending a helping hand to our kababayans (compatriots). The Southern California fires have already burned over 56 square miles and will continue to increase until it can be contained. This will mark the first time that PIA will be making a contribution towards Filipinos who are in need due to a tragedy in the United States.

How You Can Help and How it Works
We are reaching out to you for direct monetary donations to these affected families. Every dollar counts. PIA will start by making a donation of $10,000. All contributions will go towards providing essential items such as clothing, toiletries, blankets and other necessities. PIA will work with local partners to identify families in-need and will provide direct support. Here are some stories and we will continue to update this page with more.

Roque Panganiban, sister-in-law Levi Loria and their 2 kids Grace and Liam lost everything they had in the Eaton Fire in Los Angeles, CA in the Altadena neighborhood.

Jackie is a devoted mother who has always done everything to provide a safe and loving environment and home for her kids. Jacob (8) and Jolie (5) have shown incredible strength through this ordeal, but starting over from nothing is a monumental challenge. This fundraiser is a call to help Jackie and her children rebuild their lives. The funds raised will go toward securing housing, replacing essential items, and giving them the stability they need to recover.

Allison Gabucan Segal, Max Segal, and their little one, Isaac, lost their family home and possessions in Altadena from the Eaton fire. They escaped with just the clothes on their back and their 2 rescue dogs.

The Ganibi family have been residents of Altadena for nearly 4 decades. This household of five, as well as their four dogs, have been displaced by the devastating Eaton fire, which has destroyed the beautiful and historical community that the Ganibi family has cherished for years.

Filipino couple Mike and Sharon Ulanday lost everything to the Altadena fires. “One of my kids kept saying ‘I want to go home. I want to go home.’ And my other son, I have twins, so the other twin was saying, ‘We don’t have a home, it’s burned, we have no place to go.’

We understand that many have already made dontations to help during these troubled times. This includes us at PIA. However, we continue to hear the devastating stories about our kababayans and all they have lost. That's why we think it is important to come together to show the strength for our community. Our compassion and support can light the way for our kababayans as they rebuild their lives.

PIA will continue to identify and aid individual families that need our help. (If you prefer to give through an organization, gifts to the general causes can be sent to World Central Kitchen, the California Fire Foundation, and the California Community Foundation who are among several that are already providing assistance.)

Maraming salamat po.

With gratitude,
